A chemistry set is a toy. All the chemicals are absolutely safe, all the containers are the same so they make a neat row in their little rack, and the experiments are sort of interesting but you don't actually learn any chemistry.
Real chemistry requires you to take classes for a year and a half just to learn the words and the instruments. Then the equipment costs a fortune because it is mostly hand made and it has to be top quality. Go to your local college or technical book store and buy a chemistry lab manual. That will have enough information for you to assemble your own lab. (Not a "set".) You can get some good equipment at relatively low prices from sciplus.com
