A liver transplant is needed for cirrhosis patients when the liver has become severely damaged and is no longer able to perform its essential functions. This stage is called end-stage liver disease or liver failure. Symptoms such as jaundice, fluid buildup in the abdomen, confusion, and bleeding may indicate that the liver can no longer support the body. When medications and other treatments no longer work, a transplant becomes the only option to replace the failing liver and restore health.
