Although we say "World War 2", it was really a series of wars. For example, China was at war with Japan, Japan was at war with the USA, USA was at war with German, Germany was at war with the Poland, etc, but Poland was not e.g. at war with Japan, nor were they initially allies of the Chinese. China and Japan went to war on 7 July 1937. Japan and USA went to war on 7 December 1941. USA and Germany went to war on 11 December 1941. Germany and Poland went to war on 1 September 1939.

Germany invaded Poland on 1st September 1939. Britain and France declared war on Germany at 11am Sunday September 3 1939.
The USA did not declare war on Germany. Germany declared war on the USA on 11December 1941. The USA came into the war after the attack on Pearl Harbour and as Japan and Germany were allies then this meant they were also at war with Germany.
