My grandfather who never would think to greet a man with a hug, maybe a family member at a funeral. Shaking a man's hand with a firm grip was acceptable and all that was needed. When did men drop their guard, was it a movie or something else?

Not every man is against or is afraid of hugging his guy friends. Doing that will not make you less manly than the guy standing next to you. For some men that's just how they greet each other, or it's something you do, only with close friends.
However the same could be asked of women. Why do some women kiss on the cheek when they see each other? It's just a sign that the two are close friends and they've known each other for years or it's just the way your culture does it.
