A lot of times you'll hear the saying that someone is "getting ready for the holidays". But when or what exactly are the holidays? Are they a certain time of the year where there are a lot of major holidays right next to each other or are they the days surrounding the holiday

The Holidays isn't an exact time. Normally people will say "They are getting ready for the holidays" around Christmas, since Christmas is followed by "New Years" However, this isn't always the case. It can be used in both ways, as the chain of holidays, or simply just the time around a certain Holiday.
I hope this at least helped a small bit!
