AT FIRST IT JUST DOES NOTHING LIKE THE BATTERY IS COMPLETLY DEAD THAN AFTER TRYING A FEW TIMES IT STARTS PURRING AND FINALLY IT KICKS UP

Jewels is right, a battery doesn't purr, it is silent. When you try to start the mower you should hear the starter turning over the engine. If you sometimes try and just get silence then there is a bad connection. I would try to clean the cable coming from rhe battery. If that doesn't work it is time for a mechanic.
I had the sears people come over and the mechanic just said that I did not have the connections tight enough and he made them so tight that now I can't take the battery out to take to interstate so that they can check it, he charged me $99 to tighten the connections, what a bummer huh - I will clean up the connection as you suggested and see if that will help, thanks for your time
well maybe I should just get a new battery, I thought of doing that but than I thought what if it has nothing to do with the battery and it is some kind of a defect with the mower
