I'm currently reading a missionary biography. There is one sentence as below:"Medical attendance had been secured, and all kindness and assistance were shown by our missionaries and those of the Methodist episcopal mission, residing at Shanghai; but no earthly sympathy or aid could avail much in an hour so dark to the dying or the bereft." How to grasp the meaning of latter part of this sentence?
