The movie "Grapes Of Wrath" portrayed a family trying to escape the dustbowl. It was shown in Soviet Russia to show the people how capitalist societies oppressed workers, but what the peasants saw was that in America even the poorest family could own a car.
Many of the memories of the depression were actually memories of the dustbowl. If you read the story here, you notice that most people had no such problems. The news stories all concentrated on the down-and-outers.
