A Brief History of Bicycles

The first bicycle

Did you know the first bicycle didn't have any pedals? It was invented by Baronvon Drais in 1817 and was named the Walking Machine. You had to push the bike along with your feet!

Life made easier with pedals

Pedals were finally introduced in 1865 by the introduction of the Velocipede. It was made completely out of wood which meant they were not particularly comfortable when cycling on roads!

Evolution

As time passed, we had the High Wheel and also the High Wheel tricycle (which thankfully included the use of metal over wood!). Pneumatic-Tired were introduced for a more comfortable ride. AFter the war, bikes were not only used as a practical solution to transportation but also for fun and kid's bikes were introduced.

Of course, now we are all high-tech and have multiple gears (up to 21-speed derailleur gears), dual suspension, front and rear brakes and now of course Folding bikes, for the ever decreasing space we have to live in!
