What year did we stop making steam engines?

Steam locomotives were gradually phased out from the 1950s to the 1970s.They are more expensive to operate because their thermodynamic efficiency is very low, and they need a long time to heat up, clean, resupply and maintain, which is unproductive because they are not available for trains, but needs staff to work too.
