As far as religion, I am an atheist. But I do think that the basic idea of reincarnation is possible. By that, I mean that after death, you could come back as another person or animal or whatever. I don't believe that being good all the time will make you become "ascended" though and meet the Buddha himself.
What would this be called?

Atheism is a lack of belief or disbelief in God or gods. I am guessing that would be you.
However I am puzzled, you brought up the idea of believing in a god, Buddha.
Many people, refer to themselves as atheist because of not wanting to be in association with any religious organization, because there is so much hypocrisy in many of them. Some believe that only political revolution could fix the world. Others simply don't care and so form the opinion, "Out of sight, out of mind".
Some like yourself may ask, Is there any benefit to really knowing God? Others see little practical value in religious teachings or, at any rate, fail to practice what their church preaches.
Doing your own thing, or living your life without a rule book is how many feel, but this is not a new thought. As a matter a fact the Bible book of Genesis is where it all started.
(Genesis 3:4,5) At this the serpent said to the woman: “You certainly will not die. For God knows that in the very day you eat from it, your eyes will be opened and you will be like God, knowing good and bad.”
As the story goes, she ate, she died and so did her husband. If this story is true, what would have happened had she did not decided to do her own thing, followed the rules and believed what her creator, God had told her and her husband to do.
Learning what the Laws and regulations of the country you live in, and following them, can saved a person a lot of time, money and heartache.
You might find researching further information on this subject @ jw.org beneficial, or at least interesting to entertain.
Something to think about.
This an interesting question. May I ask why do you think that the basic idea of reincarnation is possible? As I sat and thought about your question, that idea would ultimately have a belief in some sort of god. How else would be one reincarnated, especially after...death, where life would cease to exist. Someone would have to bring that person back to life.
May I if you have always been an atheist and why you feel that way? The previous post that answered your question is correct as well, that you can find a lot of information on reincarnation at the jw.org site. I too would encourage you to visit that site.
This state can be called a state of Jigyasu or a state of a seeker. A seeker doesn't believe in religion although they believe that there is a power, they believe in the universal laws of Karma. They believe that death is certain and they believe that you can't ascend to God to heaven. But such a seeker doesn't want to meet God, such a seeker goes in quest to realize God within, to realize that everything is a manifestation of the Divine. Such a seeker goes in search of the truth, to realize what we are. Unless the Jigyasu, the seeker, goes forward, he doesn't realize the Truth.
