It's difficult to know but towards the end of a war, the participants naturally start imaging what may happen after the war and how their interests will be best served. I would imagine Russia saw the opportunity to increase their influence in Europe.
In the same way America lobbied Russia not to accept the Japanese surrender in June 1945 above a battleship. America had plans for Japan and needed the war extending until it could carry them out.
