What was shopping like in Ancient Greece Athens?

It is hard for modern Americans to imagine. The agora was the center of all political, social, athletic, and marketing activities. People did not "shop", they went to merchants looking to buy specific items, and it was primarily a social encounter, although a social encounter with an exchange of money and goods. Other people met in the agora to discuss politics and hear the news and whatever else an ancient Greek might have considered important. Have you ever been to a flea market? Try to imagine a flea market big enough for every merchant in town. Of course they didn't have furniture stores. Furniture builders had their shops and you ordered what you wanted. Likewise for the jewelers and anything else that had to be built. The agora was only for food.
