In 1962 the British Economy was still slowly recovering from WW2. Rationing had ended back in 1954, some 8 years prior, but the USA was using the financial whip hand to force the British to relinquish their Empire. Uganda, Tanzania, Trinidad and Tobago, and Jamaica gained their independence from the British Empire in 1962. The year also saw terrible choking smog over the whole British Isles a couple of times, and a surprisingly severe winter in December. Many people from the British isles were migrating to Australia at this time. The Conservative Party under Harold Macmillan was in power but now unpopular with voters, he resigned the following year after the scandal of the "Profumo Affair". The big movement in housing at the time was extensive housing developments including high rise modernist apartment complexes for the homeless. Youth subcultures included the Teddy Boys, the Mods were in their infancy. There were race issues as many migrants from India and the Caribbean had come to Britain. The Beatles released their first independent single "Love Me Do" that October. Most of the fashions owed more to the 1950s than our idea of the 1960s, with the boys in suits and the girls in large dresses or check prints.
