What type of Roman building did the early christian adapt to become churches?

The early Christians met in each other's homes. To them, a church was a group of people. In Acts 19:32 a mob is called a church, translated "assembly". The only type of church that used a unique building design was the European cathedral, and that was developed specifically to enhance organ music.
