The student uniforms from year 3 are my personal favorites. If you don't know which hogwarts house is right for you there are plenty of tests online to help you. The only part of the uniform you should make with a sewing machine is the robe, buying the other parts is easy.
below is a list of items you should get for the most realistic look for the rest of your costume.
1: plain white button up shirt, (the black tie is optional but recommended).
2: A V-neck sweater: either cardigan or a sleeveless sweater vest.
3: a pleated skirt at knee length
4: black tights or stockings
5: black dress shoes
As I said before you should make the robe yourself. The best materials would be wool or cotton fabric. They are cheap enough and you can buy them in bulk from a local fabric store or online at amazon.com
The sewing patterns for the robes should be easy to find online. Once you figure out which hogwarts house you want, you should match the colors of the house as closely as possible. search for images of the costumes online of course to get some good references.
I hope this helps. Making your own costumes is much more fun and they're better quality is worth it. your friends should be impressed.
I think that going as a Dementor would be the coolest because many people probably won't go as that, but I wouldn't recommend a beanbag for the body because they are usually depicted as skinny, skeleton-like creatures. Maybe if you have some dark fabrics/scarves or black sheets could be used to cover your body to make it look like a ghost.
