Hosting a Christmas Eve party for family. What time should people gather and what time should dinner be served?

To start maybe somewhere around twelve or one. This gives you time and your family time to get ready and travel. This also gives you time to get the house ready, as in setting the table or preparing food. Dinner depends on who attends and what your schedule for the day is. If there are people who will not or cannot stay up late, a 5:00pm dinner is safe, especially if there are children. This gives plenty of time for after dinner to socialize, have deserts, or open presents if the people you are hosting do that on Christmas Eve. This is just one option the schedule also depends on your families routine and the guests who attend. Hope this helps.
It totally depends on whether you will be opening presents or not. My friends have Christmas eve dinner for friends and family with presents and dinner is 6:30 so there is time to clean up the kitchen and dining room because there are usually 15+ people. If no present opening then you can seat as late as 8:00.
