The main reason Islam was able to grow and spread was through trade. Giving the short and blunt answer, merchants travelled to other cities to trade, along their journey, they would tell stories and Islam was a hot topic. Basically, trade was used to spread Islam to other parts that were not exposed to the religion (kind of like missionaries).
