So I'm trying to encourage my dad to quit drinking so much. He's doing good on his own but I think a few extra tid bits will help.
He went from 6-8 cans of Bud Light a day to 2-3 cans of BL and 4 cans of Pepsi. What's all is the same?
I know the colors and pop of the can is mental thing which helps the pattern slowing him down at the end of a long day.
I'm trying to find out what chemicals are similar in the brain that are found in Pepsi and beer, BL specifically, that causes his brain to relax after a long day.
So what are the chemical similarities?
What so similar between Pepsi and Bud Light?

I'm going to tell you flat out that you cannot stop your father from being an alcoholic by giving him comparisons and babysitting him. He has to actually believe in his heart and head that drinking is harming him and want to stop it.
You'd be better off attending meetings with Al-Anon for friends and family to find out what you are doing is helpful and what you are doing is totally useless and find out how other people handled it in their family. If dad really wants to quit he should go to AA. He attends his sessions you attend your sessions without each other.
Have you had him to the doctor for a physical so the dr could check his liver and other things?
I found a comparison but its with Coke not Pepsi. However, other than taste they are alike.
"Lets compare both.
1. Calories: Coke and beer have similar number of calories for the same quantity. Not much difference there.
2. Nutrition: Coke has absolutely no nutritional benefit. It has lots of sugar and higher sodium content than beer. Beer on other hand has trace amounts of protein and has higher potassium content and antioxidants.
3. Glycemic Index: This is where the major difference comes in. Coke has a glycemic index of around 90 whereas beer has glycemic index of less than 15. Which means from an insulin resistance point of view, beer is much better.
4. How it affects body: Coke has no nutritional benefit for body. On the other hand regular consumption will reduce your insulin sensitivity which may lead to weight gain and diabetes. Studies have shown that drinking beer in moderation has health benefits. However, alcohol is treated as toxin by your liver and puts significant strain on it. If over consumed, beer will be more detrimental for your health than coke.
In the end it comes down to how much you are drinking. If I were given a choice of a can of beer vs a can of coke a day, I will definitely choose beer. But I will make sure that I will stop with that can."
