50 degrees Fahrenheit, or 10 Celsius. This temperature would lower your heating bill while ensuring that your water pipes don't freeze.
You would have to bundle up at night, but that wouldn't necessarily be a bad thing. In fact, there are double-blind scientific studies which show that cooling the brain leads to deeper, more restful sleep. So, it's basically a win-win.
Just in case you like to dress less at night: If you have central electric heat and no individual thermostat in your bedroom, you could set the thermostat low (as above) and buy an infrared space heater with a built-in thermostat. These heaters are very efficient and would not increase your electric bill, ASSUMING YOUR HEAT SYSTEM USES ELECTRIC COILS. If your heat is gas, forget the space heater.
Normal temperatures in the summer can fluctuate depending on the region. If the thermostat is set at the desired temperature during the day, consider a 10 degree lower temperature at night. This is the tip given to me bu by the people who installed thermostat in our home, The High Efficiency Heating and Cooling Inc. Most automatic thermostats have intelligent recovery which enables the thermostat to lower the temperature gradually, so the night time savings is not lost by manually bringing down the temperature all at once.
Lowering your energy consumption can be done in many ways. Room thermostats need a free flow of air to sense the temperature, so they must not be blocked by curtains or furniture, or put near heat sources.
Your room thermostat should be set to the lowest comfortable temperature - typically between 18°C and 21°C. Try turning your thermostat down a degree or two and seeing if you still feel comfortable.
However, it isn't just the way you can save. Check with energy supplier how much you are paying per unit. Or compare your consumption through businessswitchonline.co.uk. You will be given advice and recommendations how else you can save energy and lower your bill.
