During the middle ages, most people of Christian/Catholic faith were afraid not to be religious due to the fear of being accused of being a witch. People that were openly not religious were stoned to death or hanged for their "crime", so it was far better to be religious at that time.
People that were not religious were often hermits or otherwise secluded themselves so people wouldn't find out and kill them.
Good comment. Jesus disciples were told, that after his going away, and the disciples pass, off the scene oppressive wolves will enter in among you and will not treat the flock with tenderness,  and from among you yourselves men will rise and speak twisted things to draw away the disciples after themselves. Acts 20:29
That is exactly what happened. After the death of the apostles, that apostasy blossomed and produced the churches of Christendom. They have adopted pagan rituals and have dishonored God by their unscriptural dogmas, their “holy wars,” and their immoral conduct.
Down to our day this is still happening. However things are about to change.
