It may involve Forensic Psychology / Law Society / Legal Psychology or jury psychology or court psychology or judicial psychology e.g. a book Judges and Their Audiences a Perspective on Judicial Behavior. There are lots of factors. They may be fear of divine retribution (punishment from God).
