What mistake did Hitler and his generals make during the battle of Britain?

The mistake was switching from destroying Britain,s airfields to bombing cities and non military targets. If he had continued to destroy the countries air fields and factories producing aircraft and other munitions he would, maybe, have brought the country to it,s knees.
By doing this it gave time for Britain to build up and repair it,s airfields and strengthen it,s air force
