What makes people like opera and ballet?

I'm not really a fan of either opera or ballet but different people have different tastes. I'm not a fan of musicals either but I love West Side Story so I guess I can identify with appreciating a story told in song (as with Opera).

As for ballet, it's just posh dancing.
