My husband is really into western movies and he loves anything John Wayne. I was thinking about getting him 'the big trail' because according to the searches I've done, it was John Wayne's first big role as an actor. I know there's a lot of John Wayne movies he already has. He already has some DVDs that include more than one movie & I need help from the John Wayne fans out there. Should I get him 'The Big Trail' or something else?

I have to admit, although John Wayne wasn't the best actor in the world, he certainly had presence and I do like a good John Wayne film myself. My personal favourites are The Man Who Shot Liberty Valance and The Shootist (which is sad for many reasons as he was both dying in the film and in real life while shooting it. Probably not suitable for a birthday). Both films have Jimmy Stewart in (I'm a huge fan) and I'm maybe showing a bit of bias there.
Rio Bravo and The Searchers are probably his best films but I'm sure your husband would have seen them. Fort Apache is a good early John Wayne film that often goes under the radar and isn't shown much on TV. If he hasn't got it, that'd be a popular choice.
