What job does the aileron do on a jet plane?

They keep the plane balanced and stop it rolling left to right and becoming unstable. If you think of a paper plane, it often doesn't fly in a straight line and scoots off all over the place. Larger planes would do that too (to an extent) if they weren't balanced.
