In the early days of rocket development, the field was dominated by weather scientists because that was the only known practical use for them. That has resulted in a generation of scientists who use weather terminology for everything in space. Other scientists point out electrical effects, but astronomers deny them. For instance, everybody knows that the northern lights are powered by charged particles from the sun. That is defined as an electric current, but astronomers persist in calling it "solar wind". And that is why you keep hearing about "shockwaves" in space, and the Earth's magnetic field "flapping like a flag".
