More specifically, I am signed up on Swagbucks and I am trying to earn a camera lens which cost quite a bit. How would you suggest I go about earning these gift cards? Do you think swagbucks is the quickest way or is there some other way? Thanks in advance!

I've used a lot of these points sites, including SwagBucks, and in my opinion the fastest site to get gift cards online is probably PointsPrizes.com.
The problem with SwagBucks is that their offers don't always convert and it can be quite difficult to get the required amount of points to get your gift card. PointsPrizes' offers tends to convert a lot more often. And to be honest I prefer their interface a lot more anyway.
The thing about any of these sites though is that you have to be quite persistent, and just keep sticking at doing the offers or whatever other activities they ask you to do. If you keep going eventually you'll get to your required points total. You have to remember that most people quit before they reach the required total - so make sure you are not one of those people!
I can confirm though that both PointsPrizes and SwagBucks do email working gift card codes to you, because I have received several so far. They are working and perfectly legal and legitimate websites in case you were wondering.
Usually these sites allow you to earn free gift cards by completing offers and such. I know that PointsPrizes also has a pretty good referral program that is quite effective, to help you earn extra points.
One final thing I would advise, is to avoid illegal "generator" sites that purport to give you free gift codes. I personally have fallen victim to them on more than one occasion. Generator sites are complete scams and you should avoid them completely.
