George Webber (the protagonist) writes a novel about his family and home town. When he returns, he is shocked by the outrage and hatred that greets him. Family and lifelong friends feel embarrassed by the book, their ire drives him away.
George goes searching for "himself". He goes to New York and embeds himself in the social scene and then to Paris joining a group of expats. In Berlin he is shocked and scared by Nazi Germany. He then returns to America and rediscovers it with love, hope and sadness.
