actually, all baby horses are foals, regardless of gender. If it's female it's a filly, if it's male it's a colt.
A foal is the name of a newborn horse a female is called a filly and a male is called a colt so you can have a filly foal or a colt foal when they are weaned they're called a weanling and when they are 1 year old they are called a yearling
a female horse is called a filly until its either bred or its 4 years old then its a mare
a male horse is called a colt until it reaches sexual maturity then its called a stallion or if it gets desexed its called a gelding which is the prefered riding horse due to its lack of hormones which makes stallions and mares unpredictable.
A female baby horse is called a filly and a male baby horse is called a colt. Once it has been weaned (which means it is gradually taken away from its mother) from its dam (mother), it is called a weanling. Once its a year old, it's called a yearling.
After a few years, the filly will develop into a mare (an adult female horse) and a colt into a stallion (an adult male horse). If a stallion gets desexed, it's called a gelding. Geldings are preferably the best to ride by some people.
My friend's mare is having a baby foal and it's due next week. I have been given the honour to name it since I first saw her mare pregnant. They think it might be a boy. I might name him something like Whisper or Cloud. :)
No offence, but actually a female foal is called a filly. A foal is an 'unidentified gender' of a baby horse or just a short way of calling a filly/colt/newborn foal.
