Fear, to a great extent, is born of a story we tell ourselves, and so I chose to tell myself a different story from the one women are told. I decided I was safe. I was strong. I was brave. Nothing could vanquish me.

The main idea of this quote is feeling fear and feeling no fear. Basically, it's saying that fear is a feeling everyone is born with and people fear things too much. So when it says, "I chose to tell myself a different story" it means I chose to tell myself that I shouldn't fear. It's all about telling yourself that everything's alright and that you have nothing to fear.
