A 4K screen has 4 times the number of pixels than a 1080 High definition screen. This will give you higher detail and smoother edges. It would also give you better and sharper colour definition, as more pixels of the primary colours will go into the mix. A 4k TV would allow you to sit closer to the screen without you noticing any jagged edges, so a larger screen could be used in a smaller room.
You will only gain these benefits fully when 4k transmissions start, until the you will only get marginal improvement by the TV's up scaling software, (like when standard definition is currently up scaled to HD). If you do sit a long way from the screen, then it is doubtful if you will see any difference.
It is early days and you will be paying out more for being an early adopter, prices are only just starting to fall as new production lines are starting up and 4k transmission's are few & far between.
The simplest way of defining the difference between 4k and uhd is 4k is a proffessional production and cinema standard while udh is a consumer display and broadcast standard. 4k is 4096 by2,160 4 times the previous standard, uhd for short is the next step above from full hd 3,840 by2,160.
