What is the difference between pure mathematics and applied mathematics?

Math is only valid when it describes reality. In pure mathematics they do not consider any such limitation.
When I took calculus, I asked the teacher to explain "curl". He replied "I don't know. I never studied physics." He had to go ask a physics professor to explain it to him. The one is pure mathematics, the other is applied mathematics.
