What is the difference between guilt phase and aggravation phase during a trial?

Is there always an aggravation case or is it specific to criminal cases? (I am French and I am working on a presentation about the Jodi Arias case for my English class)

Never heard of guilt phase or aggravation phase of a trial.  Suggest you use a law library. Maybe French and American law are very different.
