What is the difference between exothermic and endothermic?

I learned today in class two new definitions exothermic and endothermic. This two have something to do with heat, but I really did not understand was the specific meaning of these two words are. Can someone please explain the difference between these two?

"Ex" means out and "en" means in.

An exothermic reaction gets hot and heat comes out. Fire is exothermic.

An endothermic reaction either gets cold or you have to heat it to make it happen. A cookie is not a cookie until you bake it. Cookies are endothermic.
