What is the difference between a Topaz and Citrine?

Citrine is a form of quartz. Topaz is a separate mineral from quartz, and does not share many of its physical properties, such as hardness and chemical formula.

Topaz is an aluminum silicate. It is clear or blue, and the yellow or brown varieties are called precious topaz. Precious means pricey: they cost more.

Citrine is quartz, which is silicon dioxide. It is chemically identical to amethyst. One can be changed to the other by heating, but then it can't be changed back. Nobody has any idea why.
