Guessing you are now 18 or 19 and are going to college soon or have just started. The best way is to get yourself into about three extra-curriculars. Do a sport or two, maybe archery or something creative that the college hosts. Go party with the freshers during freshers week. Communicate and mix with the crowd you know you will like. Like myself, I don't want to mix with the people that do drugs and skip lectures, seeing as I go to uni in 3 weeks. So I'll be careful.
If you did not learn to make friends before you were 5 or so, you will find that people as a rule will not tolerate you trying to learn. The only thing the world demands from a man is predictability, and they will not allow any change, not for better, not for worse.
Take acting classes. When you learn to act friendly and can do it perfectly, then people will accept your friendliness, maybe. They still will be suspicious.
