What is metal and non metals?

Technically metals are all the conductors on the periodic table. In practice metals are the ductile conductors that are stable and solid at room temperature. appx. 70f 32C Any relatively stable solid with a valence of 1 or 2.

For instance the main reason that hydrogen, deuterium and helium are not considered metals is the fact they are gaseous at room temp and earth atmospheric pressure.

A metal is a material (an element, compound, or alloy) that is typically hard, shiny, and features good electrical and thermal conductivity.
Non-metal is an element which doesn't have the character of a metal, as carbon or nitrogen.
