Heart diseases include coronary artery disease (including heart attack), abnormal heart rhythm, congestive heart failure, heart valve disease, congenital heart disease, heart muscle disease (cardiomyopathy), pericardial disease, aorta disease, and vascular disease (blood vessel disease).
Heart disease is the number one killer of both men and women in the United States. Every year, about 935,000 Americans have a heart attack. Women, the elderly, and those with diabetes may have heart attack symptoms other than the familiar chest pains—including fatigue and shortness of breath—so their diagnosis may be a little more difficult.
