What is a grant in financial terms?

Grants are non-repayable funds given by one party (grant makers), often a government department, corporation, foundation or trust, to a recipient such as a business or an individual.
You might get a grant from an organisation to start a small business or you might get a grant from a trust to attend a private school and you are not expected to pay that money back (as you would do if you got a loan instead).
