What is genetic variation and why is it important for organisms to survive?

Greater genetic variation is what allows organisms to evolve. Also, a lack of genetic variation puts an organism at huge risk. Let's say there's an illness that either kills or makes infertile an organism with a specific allele. With narrow variation, every member of that species could have that allele, putting an entire species at risk of extinction.
