e·con·o·mize
verb
"spend less; reduce one's expenses.
"I have to economize where I can"
synonyms: save (money), cut costs; cut back, make cutbacks, retrench, budget, make economies, be thrifty, be frugal, scrimp, cut corners, tighten one's belt, watch the/one's pennies."
"they economized by growing their own vegetables"
The Greek word oikonomia means a household. The English word means management, as in the class "home economy". Since management always involves pinching pennies, the word comes to mean frugality, and by extension, the total of all buying decisions in an area, measured in the currency of that area for convenience.
When you understand that, then you can see that it is awfully dum to talk about "stimulating the economy", or to use the word as a verb. But the world is flooded with dum people, so we just try to go around them and get on with our lives.
