What is direct3d?

I'm trying to put games onto the school computers but It just says that it couldn't find direct3d. is there some way to emulate it or use something else safe?

I tried to install Direct3D before I knew this, and I was not at all impressed with the performance. I installed DirectX and there has been no difficulty. It comes from Micro$oft, so it's safe as software can get.
