Cirrhosis is a late-stage liver disease in which healthy liver tissue is gradually replaced by scar tissue, limiting the liver's ability to function properly. This scarring blocks blood flow through the liver, reducing its ability to process nutrients, filter toxins, and produce important proteins. Over time, cirrhosis can lead to complications such as liver failure. When the liver is no longer able to function, a liver transplant may be the only treatment option, offering a chance for recovery and extended life.
