An invertebrate is an animal without a vertebral column (backbone or spine). The group includes 95% of all animal species - all animals except those in the Chordate subphylum Vertebrata (fish, reptiles, amphibians, birds, and mammals).
That is a creature that has no backbone or spine. Also, there is a vertebrate which is the opposite. We have parts on our backbone (also called spine) that are called vertebrates. That is probably where they got that from. We have a lot of them.
