What is an anriod mobile phone?

As far as I know, android is a operating system for smartphones, tablet pc etc.
Android is based on linux and was developed by google.
Basically the phones you see this days, they probably have an OS of Android, iOS, Windows Phone or something else. (if you don't know what operating system is. Its like a softwere or something that basically controlls smartphones or PC's)
Also I think that the android phones are the top selling phones in the marker, but I am not sure.
