What is a white sapphire?

Sapphire is a gemstone form of the mineral corundum, an aluminum oxide (α-Al2O3). Trace amounts of iron, titanium, chromium, copper, or magnesium can give corundum respectively blue, yellow, purple, orange, or green color. Chromium impurities in corundum yield pink or red tint. The red variety is called ruby. The orange variety is called padparasha (various spellings). The colorless variety is called "white".
