What would a Simon-pure Democrat do if his party strayed significantly from the ideals of true democracy: remain loyal to the party, or leave it and join another party(Independent or Republican) that he felt was truer to those ideals? I am researching a person from the 1800's who was a Democrat, and then fell out with the local Democratic party a couple years before his death.
