How do we know this work doesn't have multiple dimensions? Maybe there are things out there that need our help. That ringing in our ears could be the way of seeking help. There could be millions of whatever is out there, waiting for our help. How many times do we have to see things that we don't understand before we realize that we're not the only things that have been created? Dogs don't mysteriously bark just to do it. They do it as a warning sign to show danger. What if this world wasn't the only thing that there was?

It's nice to see others who think outside of the box.
I doubt if we're hearing cries for help. If so, we're probably hearing just as much laughter, and all other expressions.
Dogs hear more frequencies than we do, so they're probably wondering why we don't respond when they hear something.
