I'm a writer and currently writing a story about a serial killer who uses a piano wire as a weapon, what does a murder with a piano wire look like though?

IMO a piano wire is a lousy choice. It's hard to grab, thin enough to cut hands as well as necks, hard to conceal before the attack, etc. A softer, more flexible, and thicker cord is desirable. The attacker almost always gets behind the victim to reduce the danger of kicks. The cord is about 18" long and he holds it in both hands. He flips the cord over the victim's head, crosses his arms, and pushes out. The movies you may have seen where the attacker whips one end of the cord around the victim's neck and catches it is a lousy technique because it uses weaker muscles, and it fails if the attacker does not catch the loose end of the cord.
